Do all examinees have the same exam and their level determined based on their scores?

No. Exam questions differ according to level. Different questions are provided to measure the Japanese-language competency of examinees every bit accurately as possible. Please cull a suitable level when taking the test.

When the JLPT was revised in 2010, the form of test items was changed or newly added. How were current test levels matched with former test levels?

Based on statistical assay, the passing line for the current examination is designed to lucifer that of the old test. This means that examinees with the Japanese-language competence to laissez passer Levels 1, 2, 3 and iv in the old examination tin pass N1, N2, N4 and N5 in the current test. The passing line for N3, a level added in 2010, is designed to autumn between Levels two and 3 of the one-time test, based on statistical analysis of the Japanese-language competence required to pass these levels.

3.Test sections, examination times and examination questions

Does the JLPT include a conversation or composition exam?

No, neither is currently included.

Outset with the test in 2020 (Dec), test times are shorter and the number of questions is smaller for "Language Knowledge (Vocabulary)" and "Language Knowledge (Grammer)・Reading" for N4 and N5. Does this change the difficulty or the contents of the examination questions?

In that location is no change in the difficulty or the contents of the test questions.

Test times are shorter and the number of questions is smaller for "Language Knowledge (Vocabulary)" and "Linguistic communication Cognition (Grammar)・Reading" for N4 and N5. Volition the test results be equally reliable as before?

The test results volition be equally reliable every bit earlier.
In general, a larger number of questions is said to improve the reliability of the test results.
This time, the number of questions is reduced for "Language Noesis (Vocabulary)" and "Linguistic communication Knowledge (Grammar)・Reading" for N4 and N5. The changes are based on inquiry into examination data since the 2010 revision of the JLPT, and are designed to produce reliable test results even with a smaller number of questions.
There is no modify in exam times or the number of questions for other levels (N1–N3), or "Listening" for N4 and N5.

Why is the exam department "Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar)・Reading" for N1 and N2 divided into ii sections -- "Language Knowledge (Vocabulary)" and "Language Noesis (Grammer)・Reading" -- for N3, N4 and N5?

Because there are fewer test items in vocabulary and grammer that can be included in levels N3, N4 and N5, placing Linguistic communication Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammer) and Reading in the same section may inadvertently provide hints for answers. In club to avert such a situation, 2 carve up test sections -- "Language Cognition (Vocabulary)" and "Language Knowledge (Grammar)・Reading" -- are offered for N3, N4 and N5.

Are all JLPT answers reckoner scored?

Yeah, the JLPT uses a multiple-pick estimator-scored answer sheet. There are 4 choices for most questions, although some "Listening" questions have only three choices.

The last question in "Listening" for N1 and N2 has a note saying, "この問題 もんだい には練習 れんしゅう はありません。(No practise available for this question.)" What does this mean?

Other "Listening" questions have examples to aid examinees understand the form and how to respond. The last question does not accept this kind of example with which to practice.

No question specifically asks cultural knowledge of Nihon. Some questions may refer to cultural aspects, but all questions tin be answered without cultural cognition.

Can I keep the examination paper after I have the exam?

No, you cannot take the test paper with you. If you exercise, you volition automatically fail the examination.

Who owns copyrights of the JLPT test questions?

iv.Studying for the test

Are questions of past tests published?

The verbal same test questions of every exam are not published. However, the Japanese-Language Proficiency Examination Official Practice Workbooks have been released in ii volumes since the 2010 revision of the test. The Official Practice Workbook published in 2012 and the Official Practice Workbook Vol. 2 released in 2018 each contains, for all levels, questions selected from amidst those used in tests since the 2010 revision, with the number of examination items included being near equivalent to an actual examination. Sample questions based on past test questions are scheduled exist published regularly in the future. The publication schedule will be announced on the official JLPT website.

Why is "Test Content Specifications" no longer available after the 2010 revision of the JLPT?

We believe that the ultimate goal of studying Japanese is to use the language to communicate rather than simply memorizing vocabulary, kanji and grammar items. Based on this idea, the JLPT measures "language knowledge such every bit characters, vocabulary and grammar" every bit well every bit "competence to perform communicative tasks by using the language cognition." Therefore, we decided that publishing "Examination Content Specifications" containing a listing of vocabulary, kanji and grammar items was not necessarily appropriate. As information to replace "Summary of Linguistic Competence Required for Each Level" and "Composition of examination items" are bachelor. Delight as well refer to "Sample Questions."

v.Scores and determination of pass or neglect

In test results, "Language Knowledge (Vocabulary)" and "Language Knowledge (Grammer) ・Reading," which are separate test sections in N4 and N5, are combined every bit i scoring section. Why is this?

Because many areas of "Linguistic communication Knowledge" and "Reading" in N4 and N5 at the basic phase of Japanese-language learning overlap or cannot exist easily separated, nosotros believe giving a combined score for "Reading" and "Language Knowledge" better suits the characteristics of the learning phase, rather than giving a divide score for "Reading" past itself.

How are scores for each question allocated within private scoring sections?

Some tests utilise a arrangement of totaling pre-determined points for correct answers to calculate scores. The JLPT uses a scaled score system based on "Item Response Theory" and does not total allocated points of correctly answered questions. Delight see the more than detailed explanation almost scaled scores.

The scores I received are different from what I thought I would go. Tin I have them confirmed?

Individual examinees' scores are calculated not only mechanically only besides strictly checked by specialists. As clearly stated in the Test Guide, nosotros do not accept any inquiries regarding an individual'south test results.
The JLPT uses "scaled scores." Scaled scores are calculated based on "answering patterns" of each examinee, not on "the number of questions correctly answered." Therefore, scores in the results may exist different from what you thought. Please see the more detailed caption most scaled scores.

I received my results and know my scores. How do I find out where I stand amid all examinees?

At that place is a nautical chart ("Cumulative Distribution of Scaled Scores") in the materials of each test time of "Past Test Data." You can find out where y'all stand amid all examinees who took the aforementioned test by using the scaled scores given in the Score Report and this chart.

※From the JLPT held in July 2016, a percentile rank is indicated on the certificate of examinees who passed the exam overseas (excluding those who were exempt from the Listening section), showing the pct of examinees with a score lower than yours in the six latest tests, including the one you took.

Can we compare the scores of the current examination and the quondam test through 2009?

Since the content of the electric current exam and the scoring method are different from the quondam test, the scores from the current test cannot be compared to those of the old test.

How is pass or fail determined? How many scores practice I need to laissez passer?

Examinees pass the JLPT when they accept all required test sections and (1) take a total score to be at or in a higher place the Overall Pass Mark and (2) all scores of scoring sections are to be at or above the Exclusive Pass Marks. If at that place is even one scoring department where the score is below the sectional pass mark, examinees are determined to have failed, no matter how high the full score he/she might have.

Scoring sections of N1-N3 and N4-N5 are different. Overall pass marks and sectional laissez passer marks for each level are shown in the table below.

※The to a higher place standards were adopted beginning with July exam in 2010 (December examination in 2010 with N4 and N5).

Why does passing the examination require (1) the minimum acceptable full score and (2) a minimum acceptable score in each scoring section?

This is to evaluate if learners accept a certain level of power in all three elements, "Linguistic communication Knowledge," "Reading" and "Listening."

What volition happen if I don't take a test section?

Examinees volition be judged to have failed if they miss a required exam section. Although they will receive a Score Report, information technology will not evidence scores for any test section, including those that have been taken.

If my score does not reach the minimum required in a Scoring Section, can I take simply that section again and pass the JLPT if I get an acceptable score?

No. A judgment of pass or fail is made only for examinees who accept all sections each time the test is given. Therefore, laissez passer or neglect cannot exist determined if y'all take just a department where you previously failed to achieve a minimum score. You volition pass the JLPT when you lot take the test for all sections on a subsequent occasion and earn (1) the minimum adequate full score and (ii) a minimum acceptable score in each Scoring Section.
